Heaven Luck, Earth Luck and Man Luck in Chinese Metaphysics

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

In Chinese Metaphysics, there are 3 forms of luck that influence our lives.

Heaven Luck (天运)

This is pre-determined the day we are born and cannot be changed. Based on analysing our birth dates and times, practitioners of various life analysis methods like Bazi 八字 (4 Pillars of Destiny) and Zi Wei Dou Shu 紫微斗数 (Emperor Star Astrology) are able to advise on our talents, strengths, weaknesses, capacity, favourable and unfavourable timings etc. It's pretty much a general "roadmap" of our lives.

Earth Luck (地运)

Earth Luck will be the environment including the geography and topography. This is where Feng Shui 风水 steps in. Feng Shui is the study to utilise the surrounding positive Qi to our advantage and avoiding the bad ones. If it is a "bad" year for us, good Feng Shui can help mitigate the damage. If it is a "good" year, good Feng Shui can maximize the gains. Of course, it is vice versa if you have bad Feng Shui.

Man Luck (人运)

Man Luck is what we choose to do or not to do. The free will factor. We can have the best Heaven Luck and Earth Luck but nothing will happen if we don't do anything to utilize them. Even if we are destined to strike the lottery, it will still require us to buy the lottery ticket. Success and things don't just materialize from sitting at home and doing nothing.

To achieve success, we need to do the right thing (Man Luck), at the right place (Earth Luck), at the right time (Heaven Luck).
